Veterinary medicines are classified into several categories, much the same as human medicines. Some are available via tack and pet shops, whilst others are restricted to pharmacies and vets.
All veterinary medications can be dispensed by our team of vets at eVetDrug.
We are registered as a Veterinary Practice Premises with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Our Premises reference number is 7125683.
Our registration can be verified with the RCVS directly by using their Find a Vet service.
Our Senior Equine Veterinary Surgeon and Responsible Qualified Person (RQP) is Katherine Martin BSc (Hons.) BVMS MRCVS. RCVS Number 6392867. This can be verified using the Register List at the RCVS.
Prescription Only Medications
Products classified as POM-V (Prescription Only Medicine - Vet) can only be supplied if you have a valid veterinary prescription, written in accordance with UK regulations and signed and dated by a UK registered Veterinary Surgeon. This is a legal document outlining specific details about the medication needed and the animal receiving the medication.
POM-V medications can only be prescribed by a vet if the animal is “under their care” and has had a recent examination. We can dispense POM-V medications but we cannot prescribe them, as we have not examined your horse or pet. We can only dispense POM-V medications if we have received a valid and complete prescription. Your vet is legally obliged to issue you with a prescription and is entitled to make a reasonable charge for doing so.
Written prescriptions from your vet are only required if you see this symbol next to the product.
Repeat Prescriptions
If your horse is on long-term medication, you can ask your vet for a repeat prescription to save time and money. Every prescription you send us will be saved in the ‘My Pets’ area of your account and repeat prescriptions can be assigned to subsequent orders.
Please note, veterinary prescriptions are only valid for 6 months from the date it is signed by a vet, unless stated otherwise. If your prescription is a repeat prescription, it is your responsibility to use the prescription within the valid time frame.
Other Medications
Our qualified and experienced staff at eVetDrug can dispense all other veterinary medications without a written prescription. We use the information you provide us during the checkout process to ensure the medication is suitable for the animal being treated.
Veterinary Medicines Directorate
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is the Government agency responsible for protecting animal health, public health and the environment, by ensuring that veterinary medicines are licenced, manufactured and supplied in the UK according to the Veterinary Medicines Regulations.
The VMD provide a Summary of Product Characteristics (SPCs) for all the medicinal products sold on this site. We have provided a link to each SPC on individual product pages and the information is also available directly from the Veterinary Medicine’s Directorate Product Information Database.
You should also contact the VMD directly if you have a specific complaint regarding a veterinary medicine and we have been unable to resolve the issue for you.
Adverse Reactions
No effective medicine is risk free and all medicines have the potential to cause adverse effects. If you pet experiences an adverse reaction to a veterinary product, please let us know via email and contact the VMD directly via the Suspected Adverse Reaction Reporting Scheme. Please also inform your vet and seek their advice if necessary.
