It can be given intravenously (IV) or intra-articularly (directly into the joint). Treatment can be repeated for a total of three times, at weekly intervals.
Hyaluronic acid is important in maintaining normal function of joints & also has anti-inflammatory properties. Its roles in the joint include:
- Being involved in supplying nutrients to the cartilage
- Being a component of hyaline cartilage (the cartilage found on the surface of joints)
- Regulating synovial fluid (the fluid found in joints)
- Providing lubrication to the joints (by improving the viscosity of the synovial fluid)
Hyonate can be given safely alongside NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs).
Hyonate can be kept at room temperature (below 25C), it doesn't need to be refrigerated.
